The mission of Communities In Schools (CIS) is to surround students with a community of support, empowering them to stay in school and achieve in life.
How Communities In Schools Works
Communities In Schools helps students stay in school and make right choices by connecting schools with needed community resources. By bringing resources, services, parents, and volunteers into schools, we create a community of caring adults who work hand in hand with educators.
Communities In Schools helps communities assess the needs of their youth. We then design plans for meeting those needs, using existing resources. We connect young people with services in a variety of ways: In some schools, services are made available to all students and their families.
In other schools, Communities In Schools connects services with particular students in need, either on a one-time basis or as part of a carefully monitored case management system. Communities In Schools also brings community resources to students and families through after-school programs. We accomplish these tasks by bringing the "Five Basics" into the school.

The following story was provided by a fifth grade teacher who is involved with the Homework Heroes afterschool program:
I had a student move into the district last year as a fourth grader. In our school, all cards were stacked against him because our math program is difficult, he was the new kid, and he was a foster child. He really struggled last year, but started coming to homework heroes and began improving by leaps and bounds. He passed his TAKS test and finally passed my class. His behavior improved and he found a better attitude. Now having him again in fifth grade, he continues his successful journey and has one of the top averages in his class. He still has a few bumps in the road to overcome, but at school and in math class he has really excelled and has never missed a beat this year. I now see him wanting to stay after school and watch him try really hard to do what has been asked of him. He is a joy for me to have in class.
