Senator Duncan Getting To Know Cavazos Middle School Students
Senator Duncan will be at Cavazos to join CIS “Champions”
Students for breakfast and discussion on Wednesday, March 5th at 7:45 a.m. Through a grant made possible to the 79415 zip code by Senator Duncan, CIS Champions students are participating in activities to encourage leadership development through community service projects, higher education and career awareness, and opportunities to meet with community leaders.
This event is an opportunity for students to become better acquainted with a legislator representing their community, and for Senator Duncan to get to know students and future leaders in LISD. In preparation, the Champions have researched and generated a list of questions to pose to Senator Duncan ranging from the current elections and politics to careers and even what music he has on his Ipod. The students also received instruction on and prepared the press releases for the event.

Communities In Schools Grooming Future “Women of Excellence”
As the YWCA hosts their twentieth annual Women of Excellence event, CIS Middle School girls are honored as promising future ladies and leaders of Lubbock.
Through an unprecedented collaboration between CIS and the YWCA, individuals and businesses are sponsoring 26 CIS middle school girls for the Women of Excellence gala on March 5th at the Civic Center at 6:30 p.m. “Women of Excellence” is an annual tradition when local women are honored for their achievements and contributions to the community. CIS is a school completion program helping students develop leadership skills, improve grades and access to community resources including mentors and tutors.
“The goal is to provide an opportunity for these students to meet extraordinary role models in the community who have overcome obstacles, persevered and attained success in their respective areas of excellence,” said Liz Myrick, CIS Executive Director. “We are so grateful to the YWCA and the sponsors who’ve made this possible.”
In preparation for the occasion, the middle school girls were coached and instructed in a variety of activities including social and business etiquette as well as the history of the event. Le Chic Boutique donated dresses, Rip Griffin and City Bank sponsored tickets, and United Supermarkets donated corsages to mark the special evening.
